Deep Tissue Massage
Deep Tissue massage is a type of massage therapy that centers around the realigning of the deeper layers of the muscles and connective tissue (Wong ND, 2014). Deep Tissue massage is aimed at the deeper tissue structure of the muscle and fascia or connective tissue (Brown, 2015). This massage uses many of the massage techniques and movements as Swedish massage but the pressure is more intense and focused (Brown, 2015). This massage helps with chronic aches and pains as well as providing help in areas like the stiff neck, upper and lower back, leg muscles tightness, and sore shoulders (Wong ND, 2014).
Some people find some discomfort and pain with this type of massage but according to Consumer Reports magazine, 34,000 people find Deep Tissue massage to be most effective in relieving osteoarthritis pain than typical physical therapy, exercise, and prescription medication (Wong ND, 2014). Deep Tissue massage is also most effective relieving fibromyalgia pain (Wong ND, 2014).
